Things to Consider Regarding Live Streaming
COPYRIGHT
It is important that we follow copyright laws as we live stream from our Worship Services. If you are only going to live stream or post a video of your message, then there should be no concern as long as it is just video of you giving a message in your own words. If you quote from another source, be sure to give credit to the source either verbally or in the comments on your video.
IMAGES: If you intend to add a PowerPoint presentation to your live stream, be sure you use images that you have secured the copyright for or that you've verified are public domain or open for non-commercial usage. The vast majority of the images you find online are copyrighted so be careful to check the usage rights before putting them into your presentation. You can filter search results on Google by "Usage Rights" and find images you can legally use in your presentations. From a Google search page, click on "TOOLS" then "USAGE RIGHTS" and choose "LABELED FOR REUSE" or "LABELED FOR NONCOMMERCIAL REUSE" then run your search again. There are also plenty of resources on the internet for images you can legally use in your presentations. Some have subscription fees but there are some free ones as well.
MUSIC: If you intend to include background music or a "congregational song" in your live stream, be extra careful that you have rights to use it. For Salvation Army locations, there are many songs in our song book and a few in the Hallelujah Choruses series that are either public domain or the copyright is owned by The Salvation Army. It would be best to stick to those songs unless you are certain the song you want to use is public domain or you have the rights to play it. Also, even though the lyrics to a song may be in the Public Domain, the musical accompaniment may not be. The CCLI license that all Corps in the U.S. have, only covers your use of the lyrics and music within your Corps building and does not cover streaming that music on the internet. You can add a "Live Streaming License" to your current CCLI license for an additional fee and it would cover using any of the songs that are covered by CCLI in your live streams. You can find out more about that here: https://us.ccli.com/streaming-license-terms-of-agreement/

VIDEO: Including video clips from commercial movies should strictly be avoided. There are a few movies that have now passed into the public domain but, chances are, those are very old and not the ones you are looking for. Videos that you have purchased from online resources like SermonSpice may also be copyright restricted to playback for your local congregation only. You may need to verify with the service you purchased them from that you would be allowed to stream them. Again, the CVLI license that all Corps in the U. S. have only covers playback of movie clips within your facility and not streaming them out to the internet.
Ultimately, we want to follow the law within our Corps and not risk getting into a copyright infringement lawsuit or suffering a fine. It is also worth noting that services like YouTube and Facebook will analyze your video streams and either request you stop streaming or actually shut down your live stream in-progress if they find that you are streaming copyrighted material.
